When you drive into Sebastopol, CA, you may notice something a little unique about the welcome sign. Sebastopol is proudly a Nuclear Free Zone!
Once upon a time, there were talks of building a nuclear plant on the coast near Bodega Bay. In 1985, Sebastopol passed an ordinance making it a nuclear-free zone to prohibit the passage of nuclear materials through the city. Since it's the only viable route to and from the proposed site, the deal was dead in the water.
